An injured woman has been airlifted from Grange Chine directly to St Mary’s Hospital by Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter tonight (Tuesday).

The rescue operation swung into action earlier on this evening after the individual fell and injured herself whilst climbing the cliff path on the eastern side of Grange Chine.

The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were called to the scene off Military Road at 21:40, but it was deemed too dangerous to stretcher the woman out on foot. Shortly before 23:00 the Coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-Solent was scrambled to airlift the casualty from the steep and remote terrain.

At just before midnight the helicopter took off from a field at the top of the cliff before lowering a winchman down to the casualty and the Coastguard officers below.

The woman was packaged and a high line winch took place before she was flown directly to the helipad at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.

Thankfully, the woman’s injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

HM Coastguard have now stood down from the incident. Rescue 175 has returned to base.
