A car has overturned and come to rest upside down on its roof on Staplers Road between Newport and Wootton this lunchtime (Thursday).
The incident, which has involved a blue Ford Fiesta, has happened near to the Monkey Haven attraction just down from Blacklands Lane.
Police and paramedics are on scene alongside the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, which has 1 appliance and the Response Support Vehicle – both from Newport – in attendance.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is tending to an elderly occupant of the car, who was able to free himself from the wreckage prior to the arrival of emergency crews.
Emergency services were alerted to the single vehicle collision at just before 13:22.
The road has been closed in both directions between Blacklands Lane and Wootton Common Roundabout.

How does this keep happening? Madness
Drink, drugs, excessive speed, or age related incompetence…..
The fact that, according to the report, “elderly occupant of the car, was able to free himself from the wreckage” seemingly rules out a ‘medical incident’
He might have sneezed!!
May of been wearing a pair of large white gloves?
WTF.Said it before you can easily do a ton plus on this bit of road.Perhaps if they said flipping your car on its roof invalidates your insurance it might slow some of these muppets down.If not follow me I feel the need for speed.
Oh no, not yet another drunk/drugged driver?
None of you lot read the story! Goons
You are ageist! Just because he’s elderly does not mean he wasn’t drunk/drugs driving.
Blue rinse speeding yobs.
Who do you think you are? James Hunt?
Maybe I am seeing double but I am sure that car was involved in a crash last week???
Another person who can’t read! Learn to spell you uneducated cretin
More cars end up on their roof on the island than on the world rally championships !
i like that
Gary cars either end up on their roof or parked on pavements along
Great Preston Road Ryde.
Island Motorists are totally clueless unlike people North of Watford.
Maybe we should design a car for the IOW with wheels on the roof
a wrap around roll cage…
More idiots will be along soon..
Dont you mean more idiots like yourself will sadly be along soon to write more crass meaningless words. I suspect you’re vocalaby is as limited as your brain.
And yet ‘we’ continue to complain about the lack of/or often too many static speed cameras vans . The only thing that will dramatically decrease these rediculous and preventable incidents, will be some Island morons driving within their obviously limited capabilities and their obviously pathetic road appreciation !
Too busy looking at Monkey Haven to see where he was going…
This years 22/23 best picture of car on roof competition ends soon but still time to enter.Remember only cars on roofs count so get out there flipping now.First prize 12 points on your license.
God damn, I walk that road to Island Riding Centre often and people pass bus stops at stupid speeds. This defo need some safety adjustments if we get cars on roofs now 🙁
How can you roll a fiesta on a relatively straight piece of road ???
Take it your not an islander
How elderly exactly?
I saw this car on the back of Bartlett’s! Lucky to get out of it.. hope he doesn’t trade his car for a mobility scooter… more great drivers will be along shortly….
Does everybody on this island drive like a lunatic?
Yeah ofcourse
Another driver from Burley I imagine.
next years iow calender cars on roofs.
Some interesting and amusing comments either way. Seriously, I wonder if there is some sort of hit parade for cars ending up on their roofs, and if so, how high in the charts the Island would figure? I just looked it up and the item following confirmed my suspicions that it is not easy to roll a car. here:https://www.quora.com/How-easy-or-difficult-is-it-to-intentionally-roll-a-modern-car-on-a-flat-road
I like that armed police shooting the offender as a cost saving exercise hahaha
Another pensioner having a medical episode
