A car has crashed into a house after failing to stop at a junction in the middle of Newport this afternoon (Sunday).
The Honda was travelling down Mill Street at just before 13:30 when it failed to stop at the junction with Crocker Street. The car instead ploughed into the front of a property on the corner of the 2 roads, causing damage to both building and vehicle.
It is understood the male driver suffered what has been described as a medical episode at the wheel. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service responded to the incident with a paramedic crew and an officer, but have since stood down.
Engineers have been called to the scene to inspect the damage to ‘Corner Cottage’ to ensure it does not pose a risk to public safety and the safety of the occupants of the house.
1 fire appliance from Newport Fire Station is in attendance in the interests of safety. No persons have been trapped by the collision.
Mill Street is currently closed whilst inspections are carried out and recovery of the vehicle is arranged. Motorists are diverting locally.

Medical episodes are not exclusive to older drivers, drug culture comes too mind among the younger drivers.
Perhaps medicals should be compulsory every month for the under 50’s???

Thank you for mansplayning my comment. Yes that was my point it’s a mobility car IE very uncool and a young person wouldn’t drive it. This made me think the driver was old and had a genuine medical episode if you would like to read my comment again you will see I was actually defending the driver from the “bad driving comments” I hope she isn’t hurt and makes a speedy recovery, the car can be replaced. Hmmmmm, medical condition. I know a chap that has one of those, phoned the doctors and was informed to go to the chemist to let them check him out. Off he went, the chemist told him to go to the doctors….funny old island eh!
