A driver with only a provisional licence is said to have been behind the wheel of a car that crashed on a country lane on the outskirts of Ryde over the weekend.
Police are aware of the incident in which a Citroen C3 left the carriageway and came to a stop in amongst the trees on Harding Shute, between Beaper Shute and Green Lane.
The impact was so severe that the airbags deployed.
Yesterday morning (Monday) Island Echo readers got in touch about the unusual sight as the vehicle’s doors were left wide open. It’s unclear if this was to facilitate a quick getaway or whether persons unknown have rummaged through the hatchback since it was abandoned at the side of the road.
Sources say that an 18-year-old male was at the wheel but that he only has a provisional licence. It’s understood that there was no qualified individual in the car to instruct the learner driver at the time of the crash, but the car was displaying L plates.
