A car has left the road, trapping the occupants inside, on The Downs near Newchurch this lunchtime (Wednesday).
Police, fire and ambulance crews all on scene between Newport Shute and the entrance to Duxmore Farm, where a car has left the carriageway and gone through a hedge, coming to rest in a field.
Firefighters from Ryde and Newport are working to free the driver from the wreckage by means of a full roof removal. An extension ladder is being utilised to reach the vehicle.
The alarm was raised just before 13:00 when a passing motorist in a lorry spotted the vehicle.
The road is closed in both directions and traffic is heavy in the area, with motorists using local lanes to bypass the scene.
Motorists should avoid the area – diverting via Wootton or Arreton.
UPDATE @ 13:36 – The driver has been successfully extricated from the car – understood to be a Vauxhall Corsa – and is now in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Police say that the road is likely to remain closed for sometime, describing the crash as ‘serious’.
UPDATE @ 16:26 – The Downs Road has now re-opened in both directions, Island Roads has confirmed.
A male in his 30s is receiving treatment at St Mary’s Hospital for injuries sustained.

If you want undue care and attention you need to have witnessed the undue care and attention the female police officer carried out at 1.41pm today ! The idiot officer pulled out of k Knighton Shute on to the downs straight in front of a car if he hadn’t gone the wrong side of the road along with the car following there would have been a major accident. What’s worse is the first car got further on and literally pulled to a stop and she drove off ! Shameful @iowpolice !

Obviously bad driving and speeding in the bad conditions today iv driven that road in both directions and all conditions many times and iv never gone off the side into a field probably because I don’t drive like an arrogant dick like the majority of island drivers do
