Homes and businesses in the Carisbrooke area of Newport are without water this morning (Tuesday).
A large water main has burst in the area of Mountbatten Drive, resulting in a loss of supply.
The incident was reported at around 05:40.
Southern Water are aware of the situation and engineers are heading to the scene to investigate the extent of the damage and begin repairs.
There is currently no estimated time of completion and it is unknown at this stage if nearby schools are without water.
The loss of water at any of the local schools could result in children being turned away for the day.
A spokesperson for Southern Water has said:
“Sometimes repairs take longer than we’d like, as we need to complete numerous checks and tests.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we thank you for your patience”.
An update is expected at around 08:00.
UPDATE @ 07:15 – Diggers have arrived in a field off Taylor Road – opposite Carisbrooke College – where investigatory works are underway.
Engineers are also present on Fieldfare Road.
There is still no word from the nearby schools as to whether or not they will be opening today.
UPDATE @ 07:50 – Christ the King College has advised that the school will be closed today (Tuesday) as a result of an update from Southern Water which confirms supplies will not be restored until later this morning. It was initially reported by the school that they would be open as usual.
Southern Vectis say that any students that have already been picked up by a school bus will be dropped back to their stops.
UPDATE @ 08:18 – Carisbrooke College has confirmed that the school has running water and is therefore open as normal.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the works going on in on the Carisbrooke College site?
doubt it, they’re just knocking down the old buildings at the minute
Definitely, these roads aren’t designed for the amount of heavy weight lorries that are permanently up and down the roads.
Surely if Christ the kings shut, my school (carisbrooke college) should shut too. Cause we’re closer to it
I agree bud
Would you rather it had been shut, so you could have a day at home?
I agree
It’s because you have running water Christ the king didn’t so they can’t send them to school with no supplies to drink or wash their hands , if there was an accident and someone needed their wound cleaning For example if something flammable I’m a science lesson got in a child’s eye they wouldn’t be able to treat it
If the school cant provide the necessary welfare for students then it is surely legally required to close. Water supply is part of critical welfare for the supply of drinking, cleaning and hygene. Simple.
The school should very clear in their position at this time some parents can organise any necessary arrangements in good time.
My water is on, should it be left to run or is it ok.
If it has lumps in it, best not drink, test it on the dog, or husband first.
