Bomb Disposal experts from the Royal Logistic Corps have carried out a controlled explosion on a number of flares on the beach at Yaverland this lunchtime (Wednesday).
The Aldershot-based team were deployed to the Isle of Wight earlier this morning tasked with safely disposing of a number of expired flares. The flares were deemed too unsafe to transport to the mainland.
The first detonation failed to fully destroy the items, so a second detonation was carried out in front of gathered onlookers. Bright sparks and plumes of white smoke were seen following a loud bang.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary assisted their military colleagues by establishing a cordon in the interests of public safety.
The beach has since re-opened.
