The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team from Portsmouth are at an address in Ryde this evening (Tuesday) following the discovery of what is thought to be a grenade.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts are currently on scene at Copsefield Drive off Spencer Road. Police are also in attendance.
Island Echo understands that the piece of suspected ordnance was found by workmen on a building site earlier on today.
The Bomb Disposal team crossed the Solent via Wightlink at around 17:00.
It is thought the object will either be declared safe, detonated by means of a controlled explosion or transported back to the mainland for disposal at a later date.
