The body of a man was recovered off The Needles by Yarmouth RNLI lifeboat yesterday evening (Saturday), Police have confirmed.
The Severn-class lifeboat was tasked to launch by Solent Coastguard at around 17:00 when an object was sighted in the water to the South of The Needles Lighthouse.
Volunteer lifeboat crew members made best speed to the scene and were in position just 15 minutes after launching.
The crew recovered the individual and returned to Yarmouth Harbour by 19:00, where Police and Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were awaiting their arrival.
Cordons were erected around the lifeboat mooring ahead of the undertakers arriving at the quayside at just gone 21:30 last night.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:
“We can confirm that last night (Saturday 20 June) a body was located just off The Needles.
Article continues below this advertisement “At this time formal identification has not taken place.
“However, the family of missing man Matthew Doyle, have been informed of this discovery.
“At this time a missing person investigation is still ongoing with regards to Matthew”.
