Emergency services are attending a minor road traffic collision in which a car has collided with a lamp post in East Cowes this lunchtime (Friday).
Firefighters from East Cowes, local Police and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are all on scene at York Avenue, close to Albert Cottage Hotel.
A Peugeot has collided with the street furniture and come to a stop several metres further down the road.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were initially called to reports of a car fire, but it is thought this was due to dust/smoke emitting from deployed airbags.
Island Roads engineers are on scene and are making the lamp post safe.
The incident occurred at around 11:40.
The main route into East Cowes – and to the ferry terminal – remains open in both directions.
UPDATE @ 13:15 – Emergency services are now standing down and the car is being recovered by Stag Lane Motors.

What ever going on with all the accident on the island ?
Up goes our insurance again, it’s never ending….
Lucky no one was leaning on it.
More bad lamp posts on the Isle Of Wight.
Yes! They keep planting them in front of cars, Island roads can’t do anything right…
Should have gone to Specsavers….
Are we sure we haven’t a rare virus on the Island causing so many single vehicle accidents here?
I know we have a lot of elderly with slow reaction, poor eyesight, and painful joints who still drive yet can hardly move.
Then we have many young who of course with no (official) work, and having ‘joints’ of a different kind that really ‘need’ to drive fast to get their deals done before collecting child benefits and drive from town to town to ‘see me kids’, as often scattered far and wide, but it is rare for so many single vehicle accidents surely?
Phil will explain later unless snowflakes have had the guru of road safety advice removed now.
Sad to see an individual with such inflammatory repeated comments, all getting very boring and utterly predictable.
Well said Kev
Kev for people such as yourself, I have asked admin to provide a ‘filter button’ which would eliminate me, and anyone else in the future who seem to offend you, just by a click of such, taking me forever from your gaze and anyone elses who choses to use this ‘personal’ button choice.
The stronger and less easily offended can then choose to agree, disagree or come back with relevant or even irrelevant replies instead of just being ‘sad’.
Please until or IF admin listen and act, read my name, it is distinctive and just don’t read my comments.
Otherwise those less enlightened may think you just a moaner or a racist.
Show me the button!!
Until, or IF it ever happens, scan your eyes of the name, then skip to the next, wishy washy post, you will need less Rennies that way.
After you with that button, Woowoo!
Az, You seem to have proven my point , just repeated inflammatory comments, boring and predictable, I don’t need to comment further.
And YOU dear snowflake have proven mine, that YOU still read my comment, although knowing it would likely ‘upset’ you.
Again, I say READ the Name, then scan eyes to the next more ‘genteel’ dappy comment.
Oh, and buy a home test blood pressure monitor ‘just in case’.
Calm down Az, don’t use the race card, or you will get the snowflakes exited. that card has become very boring now. I like your contribution to the echo because it’s very entertaining and those that criticize you would miss you in reality.
So, cary on and say what you think even if it afends some people, personally I think they love your comments otherwise thay would not protest…
All the best.
Clare…
Thank you Clare, but not so sure you are right about people ‘loving’ my comments, some don’t seem too anyway. Yet I likely find their dull, weak, predictable, pointless comments tiresome but I never tell them so, just ignore such.
No race card here to use. We are what we are, just wondered if that is why I am unpopular.
Meanwhile, the more enlightened among us can see just what a moaner and a rascist YOU are, Aziz!
With all your nonsensical outbursts against children, senior citizens, the underpriveliged, the Chinese, the Indians – indeed anybody you feel hatred for, you truly are a sad case.
Nelson with only one eye, one arm, and perhaps half a brain, you would be sure to miss many of the truths in my postings
Az, Your comments that you put out do carry some content worthy of note, you unfortunately cannot put your opinion out without a total abusive of one or more groups or individuals, your abuse of Nelson is yet another example, half a brain is an abusive comment that is totally uncalled for.
You continue to show a bullying attitude that is not acceptable to the vast majority and does you no favours.
I was only doing 29 on the bend, guv!
On my babies life.
The other way of looking at it is, that on the Mainland these minor shunts are thought so trivial and commonplace as to be completely non-newsworthy and it is only on the Island that they rate any mention what so ever.
I felt a bit light headed
More bad driving on the I o w
Glad to see island roads doing something useful, wonder how many members of staff it took?
And Another,1 Vehicle ‘Accident’ that is. Its about time the authorities published the cause of these single vehicle off road excursions. They won’t all be identical but there must be a common theme, then we might all learn something
How much did that little episode cost the emergency services? No wonder our Council Tax keeps going up.
All because some airhead didn’t know the difference between a road and a pavement.
And if someone drives like that then how can we be sure the ‘white powder’ was from the airbag???
I wonder if that is the car I saw sat at green lights on coppins bridge yesterday? A few cars stuck behind them, did not move after cars passed them in the other lane. Like they just fell asleep. Very odd.
