The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been mobilised to a flat fire in Sandown this afternoon (Wednesday).
3 fire appliances from Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde are on scene at Kingsley Court on York Road.
Readers have told Island Echo that fire alarms could be heard ringing down the High Street prior to the emergency services’ arrival. One witness has described seeing smoke issuing from a first floor window.
The alarm was raised at around 15:25.
York Road has been closed to traffic and a cordon established while the incident is being dealt with.
UPDATE @ 15:50 – Crews wearing breathing apparatus have entered the building with a hose reel jet and have extinguished the fire. Positive pressure ventilation is now being used to rid smoke from the building.
Drawers have been removed from the property by firefighters. It has been confirmed that the fire broke out in a bedroom.
An ambulance crew and duty officer are on scene checking over the occupants of the flat. Oxygen is being used to treat the effects of smoke inhalation.
A number of Police officers are also on the scene.
