3 people have been arrested at gunpoint and a machete has been seized during an incident outside Tesco Express in Wootton this afternoon (Sunday).
As just before 16:00, 4 Armed officers surrounded a white Mercedes A Class in the car park of Tesco Express off Wootton High Street.
Shocked shoppers watched on as 2 men and a woman were pulled out of the car, cuffed and searched.
Island Echo can reveal that a large machete – considered an offensive weapon – has been successfully recovered by Police.
A swarm of other officers descended on the scene but the incident is now being scaled back. Tesco remains open as normal.
The detained individuals have been transported into custody at Newport Police Station for questioning.
Hampshire Constabulary has been approached for a statement, with an update expected on Monday morning.

It’s about time that anyone convicted of carrying a weapon is subject to a mandatory life sentence.
You had better get busy at building all those extra prisons then.
A mandatory life sentence? That is completely detached from reality.
well done chaps !! yet another possible serious incident foiled by our Police !!
unfortunately there are far to many crimes taking place over here !! lets pay more
and get more officers to get the crime rate down !!
another trio of B ellends apprehended.
probably think they are gangsters. Losers.
What on earth is happening to the Island, knives and now machetes ! !
I just hope the courts give out a decent sentence.
My guess is, it’s all linked to drugs.
They won’t, the courts are a joke.
We are impressed and most grateful and when our Cops act in this manner instead investigating hurt feelings. Good job Police!
What on earth is going on over here these days?
Has the island become so bad, the are firearms office on hand as routine?
Fantastic job achieved yet again by our Police, many thanks to all of you who were involved. Thank you.
well done guys n girls for getting this weapon off the streets
I wouldn’t like to think drugs were involved…….
The police on the island do a great job. I’m sure the machete is “we had it to chop the meat at a bbq. Me’lord”… and don’t forget to give a nod to the people in custody who have to look after these lovelies once detailed…
