A 41-year old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, affray and threatening to damage property following an incident at Sevenacres yesterday evening (Good Friday).
As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to the mental health unit on the site of St Mary’s Hospital when a man took up position on the roof.
It has been confirmed that during the stand off the man threw tiles from above towards both people and vehicles in the car park. 2 Police vehicles were damaged as a result, alongside a number of vehicles belonging to NHS staff.
No one was injured in the incident, during which Police use riot shields for protection. Day shift staff were forced to stay inside the Sevenacres building until the situation was resolved at 21:15.
Last night’s incident involved a large number of resources with the National Police Air Service helicopter from Bournemouth drafted in and negotiators from the mainland were hurried across the Solent. A number of fire appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were also involved in the operation.
The detained male remains in Police custody at this time.
