Emergency services from across the Isle of Wight have rescued a teenager from the banks of the River Medina tonight (Friday).

A 15-year-old lad found himself stuck up to his waist in tidal mud at Medina Valley Centre on Dodnor Lane, Newport shortly before 21:30.

Firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called into action when the alarm was raised by a member of the public, with officers from Needles Coastguard Rescue Team and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team also mobilised.

1 fire appliance, a Water Rescue unit and a Rescue Tender all from Newport Fire Station are currently on scene. An ambulance and officer from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are also in attendance, as well as the 2 Coastguard teams.

Swift action by the fire service using an inflatable path and water rescue equipment has seen the male freed from the sticky situation. He is now in the care of paramedics.

No one else is thought to be in danger.

Emergency teams are now standing down from the incident. The casualty is expected to be taken to St Mary’s Hospital as a precaution.
