A 13-year-old boy has been arrested by Police following a serious assault on a 70-year-old man in Ryde last night (Tuesday).

Police were called to Ryde Bus Station by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service at 23:15 after a member of the public was found with facial injuries and bleeding profusely.

A cordon was established around the bloody scene and officers remained in attendance for around 3 hours. The area remains sealed off this morning (Wednesday) with a significant amount of blood still present on the pavement.

As part of the Police’s enquiries into the incident, a 13-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:

“We were called at 11:15pm on Tuesday 11 August by our colleagues from the ambulance service to a report that a 70 year-old man had been assaulted at Ryde bus station.

“He was treated at hospital for a cut to his mouth and other facial injuries and is now recovering.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish what happened and a 13 year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent as part of our investigation.

“He remains in custody at this time”.

No weapons are thought to have been involved in this incident.

Anyone who saw what happened or who has any information that could help with the Police’s enquiries is asked to call 101 quoting 44200305713.

UPDATE @ 12:05 – The 13-year-old has been released from custody without charge, but remains under investigation.

My question is what’s a 13yr old doing out at 1115 anyway on what should be a school night. Maybe I’m old fashioned.

True a 13 year shouldn’t be out that late on any night and this is a disgusting thing to happen.
But it’s the school holidays schools are closed.

Unfortunately not all parents know where their children are at this time of night and they all start hanging around and starting trouble.

It’s about time Police and Social Services outreach service WE pay for had a cohesive approach and tackled the anti social activities… if they don’t it will continue and get worse… watch the Police precept and council tax go up next year… for what?

And they’ll say at 13 he’s not old enough to fully understand his actions…its about time they toughened up at an earlier age so by the time they’re “old enough” they’ve either learnt or are inside. It makes my blood boil reading things like this

Trash! It knew full well. Yes we make bad decisions though life but when it comes to someone could have lost their life’s because another person anger then take it out of harms way and lock it up in broadmore!!!! So don’t make out that thing was a victim of its own miss judgment!!!!

This result is clearly the consequence when parents are not allowed to discipline the little brats these days – a smack on the backside certainly never did me any harm. I was taught to respect my elders and cannot believe how these youngsters behave in this day and age! I hope he gets a good hiding when he goes to prison eventually, after they molly-coddle him through the next few years and try everything else first, such as police cautions, fines, unpaid work and counselling, until he eventually kills someone!

They only respect violence ( very sad) so I’m afraid it was fight fire with fire. Never had any problem with them again. That lad needs to be treated the same way. He will never do that again! Sorry but that my justice!

‘In the type of work i did’? So now you are an expert in human psychology as well as everything else (allegedly). Fighting violence with violence?…..isn’t that how most wars materialise and look how much suffering results from that. If you knew a compulsive burglar, do you think that by thieving from his house will stop him doing it? You need to think on my friend.

I’m sorry but I agree with mr justice and what the hell has Wars and burglary got to do with this. We all were that age once and going through puberty thought you were Jack the lad. Sometimes you found out you were not as tough as you thought. He was lucky it was someone that couldn’t defend himself. The old fashioned borstal needs to be re introduced. What would you have done in that situation?

There was a continual damage to cars in a street in the Marchwood area, I believe
It had been going on for ages. One evening resident found a yob damaging his car and caught him, giving him a good hiding. The judge said he sympathised, but could understand why he did it and fined him.
Strangely, the incidents stopped after that. I cannot understand why, can you?
Just goes to show, spare the rod, spoil the child!

How do you make the assumption he beat up kids for a living? Nowhere in his post does he state beating them up. I’m guessing he at sometime did security on the doors of nightclubs etc. This job was to protect you and others against idiotic troublesome teenagers and older idiots.

You just got to look at the sentences handed out by our courts here on the island, way too lenient even by mainland standards. There is absolutely no deterrent to stop these little tough guys walking around with their swagger talking like they are from South London trying to intimidate people. Absolute bellends!

It’s not the Police who are soft….. It’s the Judges who decide the sentences. Way too soft on the island. The sentence needs to reflect the crime.

In my day, the police were big and tough, very unlike today. If anyone touched an OAP, they would find themselves in a cell with 2 hard cops and have 7 bells knocked out of them! The judge would smile and tell the culprit he had obviously fallen down the steps!

Prison sentence! This kid is only 13 years of age. Little shit needs to go to Young Offenders, then he’ll be sorry. Those places are horrendous. Parents need to attend responsible parenting course, they shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this. They bought him into this world, he is still a kid, a minor. They need to be dealt with as well.

There will undoubtedly be two sides to this story… either his parents will be accused of being unfit through drink or drugs, or the parents will be the type to leap to the boys defence with “my son would never do this, he is a good boy who helps his elderly grandparents, the man must have started it” Either excuse is old hat now, and the Magistrates should be wise to the Solicitors methods and give the lad a severe punishment,, but they wont, they are as much to blame for this behaviour as the Parents and the lad who committed the crime. Let a pack of dogs run free with no discipline and they become feral, just like many youth today!

I think it’s time these vile specimens are tried and punished as adults, if they can do such horrible acts of violence towards other people then they’re fit to face trial as adults.

It would also be interesting to see what the individual’s parents have to say on the matter. I’d be mortified if my child ever did something so horrible.

Don’t worry lad, IF this gets to court rest assured that you will only get a very light tap on the wrist with a feather as, after all you didn’t mean it and didn’t know what you were doing. Of course you knew the CCTV cameras were turned off as the council needs the money to repair, again, the non floating bridge and keep their useless employees in the luxury they are so used to. Turns out I was with the person they arrested before this happened we were at the top of the street next to union street we walked down to the bottom then turned left to the bottom of union street walked round the corner crossed the road saw something going on in the bus station so we crossed to the other side of the road away from it and there’s police cars and an ambulance and someone sat against a wall hugging their legs so if it was my friend he wouldn’t have got arrested 8 hours later because he was at the bus station and had blood on his top and cuts on his chin which he didn’t previously have because it was my top that had no stains on until I have it to my friend later in and he ended up cutting his face and getting blood on it so if people want to say this and that go ahead because who looks stupid for saying disgusting things about someone that’s innocent

How disgusting…I can only echo what has already been posted. However, I will add that this young piece of vermin should be taken down to Newport Square on a Saturday morning & flogged – a little barbaric perhaps for the 21st Century but a bit of proper punishment & public humiliation I am afraid is what is needed now. The softly, softly, approach has been tried & it has no effect whatsoever – time to up the ante…

Here is a question. Just suppose someone had seen what this warped little low life was doing to this old guy and intervened by pulling him away and giving him a good kicking so that he would learn what it felt like. WHO WOULD PLOD HAVE NICKED?. Now we go to the do-gooders B/S about ”Can’t do anything or name him because of his age” Where does it say ANYTHING about having to be a curtain age before he’s allowed to be an evil little feral low life brat? Little shits like this should be tagged once they have committed a crime so that the police know where they are all times and also put on a strict curfew. As someone said earlier Fight fire with fire. Let’s see photos and names too on the front pages.

This kind of senseless violence has to be stopped. If a thirteen year old displays this level of psychotic tendency, he should be removed and put in a secure place where his behaviour can be assessed by professional people. Next time it could be a Child
It wouldn’t hurt to have a group of Men patrolling the streets at night. Vigilante is seen as a dirty word but the Police can’t always get to a call in time.

Do you just assume that if kids misbehave it’s always the parents instead of the kid when you’ve got mental health to think about there’s more to behavioral issues than you realize and naming the parents would put their whole family at risk of being targeted by people that don’t care who they hit if it’s right in their eyes also the boy is innocent and actually really nice don’t talk about people you don’t know he was arrested on suspicion if you didn’t see but they won’t see him on the cameras because he was across the road with me looking at the event and wondering what had happened because we had no idea until he was arrested 8 hours later with suspicion for no reason

For the lynch mob. The article you are commenting on states that A 13-year-old boy has been arrested by Police following a serious assault on a 70-year-old man in Ryde last night (Tuesday).

There are no other facts to warrant your hysterical comments. As of writing this, the youth hasn’t been charged or convicted of an offence. The Police will investigate and the CPS will then decide to prosecute should the evidence stack up.
