A fall on the beach at one of the Island’s most popular tourist hotspots has led to a call out for the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and HM Coastguard this afternoon (Wednesday). At around 14:40, the Ambulance Service was alerted to an individual who had fallen on the beach at Alum Bay, overlooking The Needles. A critical care doctor and an operational commander were deployed to the hard-to-reach location in the West Wight – alongside The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team. The female casualty, who has sustained a leg injury, has been assisted from the beach up several flights of wooden steps and into the doctor’s car for onward conveyance to St Mary’s Hospital.
The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is warning that the emergency department and the Ambulance Service are extremely busy today. If it’s not an emergency, you are urged to use NHS111 online, pharmacies, or your GP. Islanders and holidaymakers alike are being told to take extra care, especially with babies, young children, and older people who are more at risk of sunburn and dehydration.
