77-year-old Miranda Mellor from Newport has been named as the victim of a crash between a taxi and a trailer on The Downs earlier this month. It was at 11:20 on the morning of Saturday 8th June that emergency services were called to a serious collision near to Knighton Shute. A Land Rover Defender towing a trailer had overturned, with the trailer detaching and colliding head-on with a Hyundai i40 taxi travelling in the opposite direction. The impact shunted the car backwards off the road and into a hedge. Despite the best efforts of all first responders, the passenger of the taxi – now known to be Islander Miranda Helen Mellor, known as Mandy, sadly died at the scene. The driver, a 40-year-old man from Newport, sustained serious injuries and was flown to Southampton’s Major Trauma Centre. He is still being treated in hospital. The driver of the Defender escaped with minor injuries but was conveyed by land ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital. The family of Miranda Mellor have not released a photograph of her, nor a tribute to her. No flowers have been laid at the scene. Mandy, of Elm Grove in Newport, stood in the 2008 by-election for the Mountjoy ward, coming 3rd as an independent. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is still investigating the fatal collision and would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident. If you have any information then call Police on 101, quoting 44240240538.
