Police have cordoned off a park in Ventnor following the discovery of a body earlier this morning (Wednesday). It was around 05:30 that emergency services were called to Ventnor Park off Park Avenue – an open green space popular with dog walkers – to reports of a body hanging from a tree. Nothing could be done to save the individual’s life and they were pronounced dead at the scene. It’s thought a member of the public made the discovery.
Park Avenue was closed for a time but has since reopened. However, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary remains on scene with outer and inner cordons in place around the park. Detectives from Newport CID have arrived to conduct their investigations. UPDATE @ 12:02 – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that the body of a man was found at 05:33 this morning. His family have been informed. The death is being treated as non-suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner. UPDATE FRIDAY – The man has been named locally as Robert Williamson.
