The transport price comparison website Vivanoda has claimed ferry prices on the Yarmouth to Lymington route are the most expensive in the whole of Europe. According to Vivanoda, the cost of travel from West Wight to Lymington in the New Forest is a hefty £6.80 per mile. The 2nd most expensive is the voyage from Chios in Greece to Cesme in Turkey, which costs £6.11 per mile. In comparison, the cheapest ferry fare is between Travemunde in Germany and Liepaja in Latvia, which comes to just 12p per mile. Other Wightlink routes compare poorly, with that between Portsmouth and Fishbourne costing £3.81 per mile (6th most expensive) and Portsmouth to Ryde £3.43 (8th most expensive). The 3 Wightlink ferry routes were also the 3 most expensive in the United Kingdom. The 4th most expensive was between the Isles of Scilly and Penzance, which came to £2.36 per mile. The average price of a ferry journey in Europe as a whole is £2.03 for a journey of less than 20km (12.5 miles). The cheapest route in the United Kingdom is between Lerwick (Shetlands) and Aberdeen, which is priced at a mere 33.5p per mile. Altogether, 800 ferry routes were surveyed. Viuvanoda say with regard to their price comparisons:
“We analysed tens of thousands of ferry fares on hundreds of routes… in order to get as exhaustive a picture as possible. It should be noted that only price has been taken into account in this study, regardless of the quality of service on board, differences in staff salaries, economic differences between countries, etc. “To carry out this study, we collected almost 110,000 prices for ferry crossings. Some prices included a journey for one person without a vehicle, others for 2 adults and a vehicle. We then standardised these fares to obtain a price per person and cost per 100 miles travelled.”
