Police and paramedics are responding to a serious road traffic collision on Middle Road at Calbourne this morning (Friday). At least 1 vehicle has been involved in the crash, coming to rest up a bank on the wrong side of the road. The incident has occurred on Calbourne Road near to the junction with Pump Lane. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10:40, with the first responders now in attendance. Motorists are advised to avoid the area with delays building. UPDATE @ 11:00 – Firefighters from Newport and Freshwater have now been mobilised to the scene to assist blue light colleagues in extricating and treating those involved. Furthermore, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been scrambled from its base at Thruxton, touching down in a field next to the scene. The road has been closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed for some time. UPDATE @ 11:52 – 2 people have sustained serious injuries, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary say. Road closures remain in force.
UPDATE @ 12:15 – More than 90 minutes after the crash, 1 casualty has been airlifted to Southampton’s Major Trauma Center.
