A pensioner at the centre of an attempted murder investigation has been released from custody on bail. The 83-year-old male was detained by Police on suspicion of attempting to murder a woman at a property on The Ridgeway, Sandown on Friday morning. The woman was airlifted directly to Southampton General Hospital with head injuries, described as being serious but not life threatening. The suspect was also taken to hospital, but was discharged from the care of St Mary’s Hospital on Friday night.
He was subsequently arrested and taken into custody at Newport Police Station, where he has remained for questioning. 48 hours on from the incident off Perowne Way, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed the 83-year-old man has now been released on conditional bail. He is due to return to the Police station on 9th November.
Forensic investigators have spent several hours examining the crime scene, with Police maintaining a scene guard through Friday and Saturday. Detectives from Newport CID are leading enquiries. Police say that Friday’s incident was one of a domestic nature and do not believe there to be anyone else involved.
