A community support worker has had to quit his job after being found slumped at the wheel whilst high on ketamine. 36-year-old Sam Tilbury, of Salters Road in Ryde, admitted 1 charge of drug driving when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (20th August). Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that Tilbury had been driving his Audi A4 over Brading Downs when he drifted off the road and collided with a signpost. He was found unresponsive at the wheel, with responding paramedics declaring he had suffered an overdose of ketamine. Defending, Lucy Linington explained to the bench that her client’s role as a community support worker ‘took its toll on him’, so he lent on drugs – a role he has since resigned from. She explained that Tilbury had taken ketamine and then drove for a period of 20 minutes – on his way to band practice as a local musician – before feeling unwell. Tilbury was convicted of drink driving back in 2011. Magistrates adjourned the case to allow for a pre-sentence report to be compiled ahead of sentencing. Sam Tilbury has been handed an interim driving ban ahead of his next appearance in court on 1st November.

Very lucky that he didn’t drift into an on coming car and causing loss of life. Needs to be banned from driving for at least ten years and sent to prison. This of course wont happen!
As this is his second drink/drug driving conviction, he should be banned from driving permanently.
So who supervise the ‘support workers’? Or shouldn’t I ask?
Looks like the support worker will need support from a….. support worker.
He was a supervisor!
The company itself needs to be investigated more carefully.
I have heard this too. Vulnerable people being left without support and not being given notice…..
The company apparently knew what he was doing and yet they still let him work. I’d be worrying about my loved ones being driven round by that!
And those saying aw he needs help. He had his chance when he was convicted the first time. He could have killed somebody. And the company should be held accountable
As a company you are not allowed to sack someone until proven guilty otherwise you will be taken to court for unfair dismissal.
What this person done in their own time is nothing to do with the company.
I have always found the care company very professional and have no concerns with them.
People always want to blame the company but this man needs to take responsibility for himself.
How come someone has commented that he was reported by a client and that the client lost their support?
Not something someone would make up really is it?
If it was a loved one of mine I would expect them to be believed, especially if they were vulnerable
Looks like you work with company with how defensive you are being
I do know the facts, you obviously don’t.
See
Very defensive!
I know a lot more than you, clearly
The facts are
He was reported
The company believed him over the client (and what a surprise he then has the accident)
Client lost support over his lies
Now it’s all come out so ♀️
He should have been suspended at that point pending investigation
Why do these idiots always have an excuse for taking drugs? If he was finding the job too much quit not take drugs you numpty. Hopefully his car was a right off and he has to be a bus w….. now!
Luckily no one was injured. Have no time for these reckless selfish people.
right off = write off
The company itself needs investigation.
They employ staff who are not fit to work with vulnerable people.
Doesn’t sound like he could support a Football Team
yet alone be a support worker.
Very embarrassing.
P45 might be the safest option.
Silly man
What a waste of life and now has no job and soon no driving licence.
Trouble is that this low life is still working with vulnerable people.
The fact that the company and the owners are not registered means they do not have checks .
No he doesn’t.
I think you need to do your research
before you comment then you would know he left a while ago.
Quick search of him checks out – certainly looks the type
“looks the type”!
I think that you’ll find it is best not to judge on appearances (especially on this island where all of the locals look like extras from the Wicker Man).
Cue Banjo scene from Deliverance….
I just hope this has been reported to the Safeguarding team at the council. Were there really no signs that he wasn’t fit for the job? Can’t believe it’s the first time he took the drugs. The company had a duty of care to suspend him and run drugs tests as soon as any concerns regarding the individual were raised. Please people if you have any concerns regarding the individuals (or company) that are supporting your vulnerable loved ones, report it to the safeguarding team. They are legally bound to act on these reports.
