Explosions have been heard and black smoke has been seen billowing into the skies above Lake amid a shed blaze, which has spread to a family home and 2 vehicles. The blaze broke out at the far end of Desmond Price Close at just before 19:00. 4 appliances from Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde are on scene with firefighters utilising 2 main jets and breathing apparatus to tackle the fire. Access to water hydrants is proving a challenge so a water carrier from Ventnor has been requested.
The blaze has destroyed a garden shed and has caused damage to the side of a residential property – with the fire also spreading to a car and a Ford Transit camper van. Thankfully, the fire has not spread to an electric Nissan Leaf which is also parked on the driveway.
Local residents have described seeing flames 30ft high, followed by an almighty explosion. Island Echo understands gas canisters inside the shed exploded, sending loud booms across the local area. No injuries have been reported at this time.
UPDATE @ 20:02 – The water carrier from Ventnor has now arrived on scene and has begun delivery, with an aerial ladder platform from Newport also now in attendance. Engineers from SGN (Southern Gas Networks) and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks have also arrived at the incident. Firefighting efforts continue with the main focus being on the camper van, whilst damping down of the charred garden continues alongside.
