A man in his 60s has tragically died after being pulled from the sea in front of crowds of beachgoers at Freshwater Bay. The individual was sighted in difficulty and rescued from the water onto the beach at around 11:40 this morning (Sunday). 999 calls were swiftly made as CPR got underway, with the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service mobilising an ambulance, critical care paramedic and an operational commander to the scene. The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was also scrambled from its base at Thruxton, landing near to Dimbola Lodge. HM Coastguard mobilised Needles Coastguard Rescue Team to assist. Sadly, despite the efforts of all involved, the man’s life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s thought the man’s family were with him on a day out at the seaside as tragedy struck. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was made aware of the sudden death at 12:07 with officers deployed to Freshwater to establish the circumstances of the death. A spokesperson has said:
“The man’s next of kin is aware of this unexpected death, and a file will be prepared for the Coroner”.
