Island runners impressed on the big stage as Ryde Harriers athletes produced strong results in London and Austria last weekend.
Ryde Harriers athletes impressed on both the domestic and international stage over the weekend, with strong performances recorded at the Hackney Half Marathon and the Salzburg Marathon.
In Austria, Carly Scoble bounced back from disappointment at the London Marathon by producing another sub-three-hour performance at the Salzburg Marathon.
Running steadily through the early stages before increasing the pace after 10km, Scoble passed the halfway mark in 1hr 26min 43sec and maintained her form deep into the race. Despite a slight slowdown after 30km, she finished strongly in 2hrs 55min 41sec — securing 4th place in the women’s race and 2nd in the women’s 35-39 category.
It marks the third time Scoble has completed the marathon distance in under three hours.
Ryde Harriers coach Geoff Watkin said:
“Carly’s issue in London wasn’t related to fitness.
“Her level of fitness was high and it was possible to recover in the three weeks, so this was another excellent performance and less than two minutes away from her personal best.”
Meanwhile, in East London, Chris Newnham and Joe Wade took on the huge Hackney Half Marathon, which attracted around 25,000 runners.

Despite the challenging and twisty course making personal bests difficult, Newnham produced an excellent run to finish eighth overall in 69min 54sec, also taking first place in the men’s 35-39 age group.
Clubmate Wade, who works for race sponsor Hoka Running, finished in 73min 46sec to place 33rd overall and fifth in the same age category.
The Ryde Harriers is one of the oldest running clubs in the world who organise a range of running events for all levels. Their active running membership sees participants take part in races across the country (and beyond) on a variety of terrain.
