“A judicial review will allow Ryde voices to be heard,” an Isle of Wight mayor said, after the controversial West Acre Park development was given the go-ahead.
Local councillor, Michael Lilley, again questioned the procedures and processes behind a decision to approve its next phase – 473 new houses on the former Westridge Farm site.
The Isle of Wight Council maintains procedures have been followed correctly.
The representative for Ryde Appley and Elmfield, Councillor Lilley, said he was ‘very saddened’ by Tuesday’s planning decision.
He has since raised a number of issues around investigations into on-site wildlife and what he calls a lack of consultation on an issue which ‘will change the natural environment forever’.
Isle of Wight Council insists it has followed the letter of the law in its handling of the scheme.
The organisers of a campaign against West Acre Park are preparing a case for judicial review. Meanwhile, Isle of Wight Council’s former chief executive, John Metcalfe, previously produced a report which offered a defence for every point.
Councillor Lilley said:
“This is now not about housing versus environment, but about fairness, transparency, proper process and law.”
Following the planning councillors’ decision, once the legalities are signed off, campaigners will have 6 weeks to submit a case for judicial review.
When will dodgy dealings stop.

Why don’t campaigners go join pension protests in France. We can’t be saying we need more housing for IOW children to grow and stay on the Island and then say can’t build any, like we need to go green and be environmentally green – but can’t have wind turbines,solar farms or biomass. It’s only a few houses on now dissuseed site . Council tax is being wasted defending when could be used for essential services or reduce burdens on poorer working class. This would create jobs, bring in council tax and help school keep numbers of children before they have to close and our children at expense of council tax would need to be bussed elsewhere. No one disagrees we need more GPs and Dentist but that’s same across UK.
A sensible comment on here at last. It’s another NIMBY situation.
Most of these new houses will end up as holiday homes.

Well nobody has listened so far re this development or Pennyfeathers, why is anyone going to listen to Ryde residents now?

We will see our lives get worse with more overcrowding, traffic, and I wish new residents the best of luck finding a dentist or seeing a GP, meanwhile the waiting lists grow for people who already live here. And what measures will be taken to prevent this, will our roads be expanded, new schools and doctors surgeries built? Of course not because it would cut into the profits of the developers. 475 houses here, another 900 houses also in ryde, hundreds more in cowes, Newport, who are these houses really for? Is there really much demand from the locals for new housing? With it costing £300,000 for a 2 bed bungalow at this ‘west acre park’ development it has become obvious who will be buying the houses, and I’ll give you a hint, its not locals

Seven golf courses on the island.Maybe one at least could be sacrificed if this unsustainable tendency increases as it surely will,for over populating rural terrain Golf courses are by definition a complete waste of land and i imagine just one of them would absorb this hideous number of unwarranted intrusions ?
It’s all very well building more houses, but we need more doctors, dentists, schools, & other things before we build more houses, this was a farm, we need this area to remain as a farm.

imagine, another 1,ooo cars in Ryde alone… then another 1,000 in Newport… and so on… Gov said x amount of houses to be built in HAMPSHIRE and the Isle of Wight…. how many they building in Hampshire ?? How many police in Hampshire, Hospitals, surgery’s, dentists… etc etc… how does that compare to Isle of Wight…..what is it now 140,ooo people, and maybe 10 police on the Island….. one small hospital for 140,000 people now..
NO immigrant has ever ‘arrived’ with land to put a house upon, and FEW immigrants arrive with the money to PAY for any home provided.
So we lose our green fields, AND have to pay these unwanted people to ruin the quality of both our, and our wildlife’s lives just to ‘improve’ their lot in life.

Forget the natural environment and instead think about the loss of yet another food producing farm at a time when the Whitehall bureaucrats are dishing out over 1 million new resident visas a year and also trying to block new livestock farms or eliminate existing ones and ask yourself how we will feed ourselves in the coming years ? The answer is they intend to force us onto a diet of processed vegetable pulp and insects from ‘vertical’ farms – little by little they are eroding our living standards and driving us back into medieval peasantry at the behest of unelected supranational bodies like the UN and WEF and all the main parties are onboard with the destruction

St Marys has a total of 296 beds… to cater for 140, 000 + people on this Island.. adding another 2000+ homes on this Island is ridiculous. Do they not realize that could mean another 2000+ people moving here ?
