A team of 28 Ryde Harriers and supporters travelled over to the mainland last weekend to take part in the Gosport Half Marathon, joining a field of 1,375 runners.
Gosport Half Marathon is a fast-paced course, encompassing a two-lap circuit along the Lee-on Solent promenade and adjacent Marine Parade Road.
This year the weather was uncommonly good, given its exposed position on the coast, with only a light head wind in the 1st and 3rd quarters of the race as runners headed out towards the West most point on the course. But with the head wind having more of a sting in the tail in the 3rd quarter, as runners turn at the half way point, now with the added fatigue in the legs.
Fastest Harrier to the finish for the men’s team was Chris Newnham in a fantastic time of 01:11:08 for 7th overall, followed by Ross Holme in 01:16:14 who has seen massive improvements this year, completing the team was Daniel Furmidge in 01:16:59 who also collected the 1st Vet 50 prize.
For the Harrier ladies’ team, Bethany Howarth had an outstanding run for her debut as a Ryde Harrier, finishing in 01:21:01 and taking the 2nd Lady and 1st Senior Female prizes.
Jenna Williams, another relatively new member of Ryde Harrier had a good race, finished in 01:36:20. Gemma Maddocks completed the lady’s team, coming in 01:49:19.
