PERSON DIES AFTER CAR GOES OVER CLIFF EDGE

imageUPDATED: A rescue operation is this evening (Thursday) underway at St. Catherine’s Point, Niton after a car is reported to have gone over the cliff edge.

All emergency services are currently attending the incident at Old Blackgang Road. It was originally thought the car had gone over the cliff at St Catherine’s Lighthouse, however fire crews diverted further up the road to locate the incident.

It is understood that at least one person is trapped.

imageUPDATE @ 19:52 – The operation to free a trapped person from the wreckage of a vehicle has been scaled back as it is understood the occupant of the car has died as a result of the traumatic impact, which has resulted in a single vehicle landing on its roof deep within a wooded area.

The blue car is understood to have left the main Niton to Blackgang Road shortly before 18:00, going off-road near to the former Niton Radio Station before plummeting over 100ft to the trees below.

imageFirefighters from Newport and Ventnor were deployed to the incident, including the Rescue Tender and Incident Support Unit. However, due to the death, the units were stood down.

One pumping appliance from Newport and one from Ventnor remain on the scene alongside Ventnor Coastguard and Police.

Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were also dispatched following the emergency call.

nitoncliffplunge3CID officers are currently examining the scene. It is understood the next of kin, who live nearby, have been informed.

A Police helicopter has also circled the area.

UPDATED @ 21:20 – The body of the deceased person has now been recovered.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has left the scene.

nitoncliffplungeUPDATE @ 22:15 – Police have tonight confirmed that the body discovered at the foot of the cliff is that of a 40-year-old local man.

Officers were called to the scene at around 17:45. The vehicle discovered is a Renault Laguna.

There are no suspicious circumstances and no-one else is involved in the incident.

Next of kin have been informed.
