A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after quick-thinking neighbours worked to extinguish a wheelie bin fire at a residential property in Binstead late last night (Saturday). At just before 23:00, locals on Broadway Crescent discovered a bin alight at the front of a terraced row of houses near the junction with Sherborne Avenue. Households were alerted as other neighbours used a fire extinguisher and water to dowse the flames, in a bid to stop the fire from spreading to the properties. Thankfully, the situation was quickly contained ahead of the arrival of 1 fire appliance from Ryde. Police were called to the scene due to the suspicious nature of the incident, with investigations into the possible arson attack on the Council-owned recycling bin now underway. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that as part of their investigations a 37-year-old man from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of arson. He remains in custody whilst enquiries continue.
