Police, HM Coastguard and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are responding to an incident at Whale Chine off Military Road this evening (Thursday).
Several emergency vehicles are on scene along the remote stretch of South Wight coast having been alerted to a concern for welfare at just before 17:30. Weather conditions are far from Summery with misty rain enveloping the dramatic and dangerous coastline. Ventnor and The Needles Coastguard Rescue Teams are in attendance, alongside the Coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-Solent. Coastguard Rescue 175 diverted from a sortie off the coast of Dorset to fly straight to the scene, landing on the cliff top after circling overhead. Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are also in attendance, alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service. UPDATE @ 18:07 – It has been confirmed that concerns for the welfare of a woman have prompted the emergency response this evening. Island Echo understands the female casualty fell or jumped from the cliff. The woman is now in the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service having survived the fall. The incident is now winding down with the Coastguard helicopter having departed the scene, returning to base. UPDATE @ 18:55 – The casualty has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment to injuries sustained.
