UPDATED: LANDSLIDE AT ZIG ZAG ROAD PROMPTS EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO VENTNOR

A fresh landslide in a residential area of Ventnor has led to Police closing a number of roads in the town this evening (Friday).

Emergency services are in attendance on Zig Zag Road, where Island Echo understands some of the cliff face above has given way.

Fears are growing that there could be further movement, but no evacuations have taken place as of yet.

Assessments are being undertaken to ascertain the extent of the situation, and whether there is risk to nearby households. Police have deployed a drone to get an aerial view of the area.

The fall has occurred behind the property ‘Tower House’ at the junction with Bellevue Road.

The incident began at around 18:45 and is the latest landslide to occur in the Ventnor area. This morning a rock fall occurred on nearby Gills Cliff Road.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has several resources in attendance, with numerous Police units also present.

Zig Zag Road and Bellevue Road have both been closed – from top to bottom – with hard road closures expected in due course.

The Isle of Wight Council has been anticipating such incidents in January and February, as a result of the record-breaking weather seen in October last year.

UPDATE @ 22:30 – An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson has tonight said:

“We can confirm that a landslide occurred on Zig Zag Road in Ventnor (Friday 23 February). Emergency services, including the Police and Fire Service, promptly responded to the incident earlier this evening. As a safety measure, the affected area has been closed off to traffic.

Tomorrow morning (Saturday 24 February), the Council will assess the extent of the slip.”

UPDATE SATURDAY – Daylight has revealed the extent of last night’s landslip.

Idk why you’re being downvoted, more likely a result of climate change (heavy rain saturating the soil and increasing its weight) than the likelihood of domestic terrorists.

Yup. We were warned over 7 years ago that the UK impact would be more rain. No-one took it seriously and carried on regardless.

Poor Ventnor is taking the battering it hasn’t had for years. I feel for all those who live there and are affected. You guys are pretty boss to have to deal with it all.

I just hope all these landslides are not the precurser to a collapse of biblical proportions.

Campaigners want £30m to fix the Military Road, and good luck to them, but isn’t the collapse of residential areas even more deserving of investment and when you consider the extent of erosion on the south of the island the cash required is significant ? Government is already funding flood prevention measures, how much can we realistically expect them to stump up ?

Check out the outside of the house behind and above the one in question on google maps and look at the dampness on the outside render, the render is all falling off. Looks like serious water problem coming from underground down the face of that part of ventnor.

Seems to be a lot of neglect in Ventnor. Take a stroll around and you can see that many garden walls are leaning and even defying gravity. Some walls will be tumbling soon enough and the home owners should fix them before a person is crushed. Many properties are also tatty and in a state of disrepair. Young people don’t seem to understand that properties need regular maintenance, especially roofs. There are lots of properties with cliffs and banks above and below them, which should be inspected regularly. Work can be done to stop collapses in many cases. Just be responsible and look after your property rather than waiting for problems to happen.

OK folks this is not climate change.. That is a term people use to justify their way… It’s the natural order of things.. Landslides are a force of nature same as flooding…. QUESTION…… Ice age OCCURED 10000 years ago… Nature’s way.. We didn’t influence it then or now…

The island is falling apart. I blame developers and planning,
the island is unstable, all the building works is cracking up the
Island.

Just wait for all the landslides in a few weeks time.
