An Islander who stole a vape from a shop in Ryde has been ordered to pay the business £90 in compensation. Matthew Lewendon, 53, of no fixed abode, admitted theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week. Crown Prosecutor Liz Miller told the court that on 1st June a staff member at Ape Vapes in Ryde made a report that a male had come into the shop and had taken a vape from the counter, leaving the store without paying. He then waited outside with a dog before leaving the area with another male. The incident was captured clearly on CCTV and was described in court as blindingly obvious. Police were able to identify the thief as Lewendon. The vape – valued at £90 – wasn’t recovered. Magistrates ordered Lewendon pay compensation of £90 to Ape Vapes and court costs of £85.

Some homeless people think that because of their situation they’ve got licence to steal whatever they need.
