Detectives are leading an investigation into the discovery of a firearm in woodland on the outskirts of Newport yesterday afternoon (Wednesday). Officers descended on Mark’s Corner Village Road, close to Hillis Gate Road, at around 15:30 and quickly locked the area down. Local residents were prevented from coming and going. A search of woodland beside the residential road – to the rear of Parkhurst Forest – soon uncovered a gun, which was subsequently recovered from the scene. Forensic investigators were called in to examine the firearm and the area where it was discovered. Police left the scene at 18:30.
It has been confirmed that no other items were located in the same area, with enquiries ongoing to establish the full circumstances. It’s unknown if the weapon has been involved in any criminality. No arrests have been made at this time.
