Part of the High Street in Ryde has been closed by Police tonight (Saturday) after the driver of a Volkswagen Golf lost control, crashed and fled the scene. The black Golf is said to have been travelling up St John’s Road before turning left into the upper part of the High Street, allegedly at speed, shortly before 20:45. The driver is said to have then lost control of the vehicle, striking the kerb and a bollard which snapped the rear wheel. The Golf subsequently smashed into the rear quarter of a Land Rover Discovery, which was shunted forward and into the rear of a Hyundai Tucson.
Island Echo is told that the VW driver fled the scene in the moments after the impact – the force of which was enough to deploy the vehicle’s airbags. It’s unknown at this stage if the vehicle was stolen. Police have closed the road and have arranged recovery of the vehicles involved. No injuries have been reported.
