A free 1-hour parking scheme is being introduced in Ventnor while works at The Graben – which begin today (Monday) – are carried out. The Isle of Wight Council is offering motorists 1 hour of free parking at Central, Eastern Esplanade, The Grove and La Falaise car parks from today. Motorists must still get a ticket from the machine and display it in their windscreen to benefit from the offer. The scheme will run until 19th July in a bid to help businesses in the town while a new traffic management system is in place. This is to allow Southern Water to carry out essential repairs to its infrastructure on Newport Road, as previously reported by Island Echo. Colin Rowland, the council’s strategic director of community services, has said:
“We recognise the importance of doing what we can to encourage people to shop locally and visit the town during these works. “By offering this free parking scheme during the works we hope it will have a positive effect on footfall into the town.”
Ventnor Town Council also offers free parking at its Dudley Road, Pound Lane and Market Street car parks on Saturdays, between 10:00 and 16:00.
So, the Isle of Wight Council agrees that free parking does actually ‘help businesses in the town’?
Strange that they don’t offer free parking all the time if they want to help struggling businesses on the High Streets.

Until Council pull their finger out all residents and businesses should withhold council tax etc, council should not be allowed to take money from car parking and not reinvest.Ventnor pays tens of millions of pounds to IWC yet soon they will be completely cut off because IWC not sorting roads or any contingency plan etc. Lower Gills Cliff could of been open weeks ago,Leeson Road for sometime , Under Cliff drive could be open as temp access etc. IWC is not fit for purpose and hopefully we get something better in election. Simples council should not be charging and not providing services.
A huge proportion of residents have NEVER paid full council tax as most go from not paying as they “gotta few scattered kids” and by time they have blessed us with their last child, they are then claiming “disability’ PiP and countless other benefits to avoid paying, only taking from the system.

Where does the word Graben come from
My friends and relatives who have lived in Ventnor for 60 years have never heard of it
A graben is a piece of the earth’s crust that has sunk below the surrounding level. I’m not sure that the term is appropriate here, on such a tiny plot of land, but hey-ho, perhaps I’m wrong.
It is appropriate. In geological terms, a graben is actually an elongated trough of land produced by subsidence of the earth’s crust between two faults. The graben is sinking while the area above it remains stable and the area below is falling away.
First day of so-called one way system Godshill to Whitwell – I passed five cars going against the one way and this despite there being FOUR No Entry signs in Whitwell, at Kemming Road, Nettlecombe Lane, Bannock Road North and Southford Lane. So where are police monitoring this one way system? Then to crown it all there are now temporary traffic lights between Dean Farm and Whitwell, on the ONLY road into/out of Ventnor.

I can’t afford to miss a day’s work and I finish at 9 tonight god knows what time I’ll get home before I start off tomorrow.
