Technical issues with the aft main engine on board Red Funnel’s Red Eagle has led to the cancellation of at least 2 vehicle ferry crossings this afternoon (Saturday). The cross-Solent operator has been forced to cancel both the 16:00 from Southampton and the 17:30 from East Cowes – on what could be one of the busiest days of the year as holidaymakers start their Summer breaks. It is the latest problem in a series of almost daily technical difficulties to hit Red Funnel and comes just 2 weeks after Red Eagle was pulled from service for more than a week for repairs. It is unclear whether there will be any further cancellations as the day progresses. Red Funnel apologises for any inconvenience. UPDATE @ 19:35 – The 20:30 East Cowes to Southampton ferry is delayed by some 90 minutes, it has been advised. Furthermore, the 22:00 sailing from Southampton and the 23:30 from East Cowes have both been cancelled due to ‘operational reasons’.
