No injuries were reported in a crash that saw the driver of a Mercedes career into a hedge on the main road to Niton yesterday evening (Monday). Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were called to Niton Road between Beacon Alley and Shinybricks Lane at around 19:00. At the scene, a Mercedes travelling toward Niton lost control and ended up in a hedge. Luckily, no injuries were reported. The road was blocked for a while before the vehicle was recovered at 20:00. Large skid marks – from where the driver lost control – are visible on the road.

‘Skid marks’. Obviously going too fast then. Thank God no one was in the way.
It wasn’t the Merc that ‘lost’ control. The Merc was never in control. It was the driver, as you correctly say at the end of the piece
Glad no one was hurt and on the risk of sounding boring … there should be a lower speed limit put from beacon alley onwards to Niton and the from godshill onwards to whitwell . We experience or witness near misses most days . With drivers speeding . Both villages are farming villages with tractors coming out of fields and horses on our roads . If they reduced it to 30mph – 40mph would be a lot safer for everyone. Whitwell village hall have mentioned this before. And with the lorry park on the bend at bleak down if the lorry’s come from Newport they get on the opposite side of the road to sweep round into the yard – that’s going to cause an accident if people continue to speed or drive recklessly.
If drivers are currently speeding, ie exceeding the speed limit surely lowering the limit won’t stop them speeding but merey increase the amount they are exceeding the limit by? And anyway, skid marked indicate a loss of control, not necessarily speed. Often loss of control of large powerful cars occurs when elderly drivers change to automatic transmission which they are not used to and hit the wrong pedal.
Reducing the speed limit, say to 40 is absolutely fine. But will it work? The problem on the island is that drivers don’t obey the speed limits. Many are the times that I have driven at the speed limit permitted and got tailgated by another driver pressurising me to go even faster. Sorry, I have no sympathy with careless drivers who get involved in “accidents”.
Some people are just reckless and shouldn’t be allowed on the road. Inconsiderate, dangerous and just plain stupid
Bet they weren’t the only skid marks.
If it was true to form for the island probably just forced off the road by a drug driver, white van or a combination of both.
Why is it always a white van, why not a red one. Your implying that everyone that drives a white van is reckless.
Because a) there are more of them and b) they majority are reckless
Any colour van if you like.
If in the unlikely event they are actually insured the windscreen will be obscured with a months worth of takeaway bags.
Often seen congregating outside village bakers.
Driving position is normally one hand occupied with their phone.
Probably on drugs!!!!
Can I suggest that the skid marks on the road were probably not the only ones? A few less visible without a doubt.
Oh my god, those bloody motorcyclists….. just wait for the comments 😉
More idiots will be along soon…
I expect they were divorced too – that’s even more likely…
‘Large skid marks – from where the driver lost control – are visible on the road.’
They were visible in their pants too I imagine.
Selfish idiot, driving irresponsibly through country lanes. 60 is a limit not a target!
Forget the driver, is the hedge okay?
Bet there were some brown skid marks too!
Probably straight out of the pub, taking back lanes, thinking they won’t be caught and driving like an idiot. Hopefully breathalysed and will lose licence. One less scum bag to dodge on the road!
Losing licence usually means illegal driving will occur at some point as a lot of people don’t realise that they can’t drive anymore
No mention of the driver being arrested so no need to draw that conclusion. Mine is that the driver is a grockle driving to fast on roads they don’t know
Will speeding ever stop on this island
Doesn’t look that way, just like the rest of the world.
Speeding is everywhere. Will it stop happening? No, unfortunately not. Those that do 25-30 in 60mph zones, also are a danger as it gets people behind frustrated and make sometimes, silly decisions.
