The Isle of Wight Council is asking Islanders to correctly dispose of their garden waste this Summer season. Garden waste is often found fly-tipped on Isle of Wight Council land. This is most often found by back gates or fence lines of residential properties. Residents often don’t realise how harmful this can be to the environment. The negative effects of fly-tipping garden waste include the introduction of invasive species to the local habitat. It can also cause damage to trees by raising soil level around the base which reduces the oxygen available to the tree bark and roots, increasing the likelihood of tree death. The term invasive species refers to non-native plants and animals that have been introduced into wild habitats. There are 36 species of invasive plants that are listed as species of concern in the United Kingdom. These include Himalayan Balsam, Japanese Knotweed and Monkeyflower. It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) to spread any of these invasive species. This includes spreading by fly-tipping. Book an appointment to dispose of your garden waste at Lynnbottom or Afton Marsh recycling centre at https://www.iow.gov.uk/hwrcbooking/book.

Why’s that so you can cut the grass and parks and leave all your cuttings everywhere for the ‘birds’ nesting!
If the council doesn’t want ever more fly tipping why on earth have we got one of the highest priced garden waste bin costs in England?
And why not weekly during summer months and maybe once a month in the winter
Not one of. The highest in the uk
I tipped over 50 loads of garden waste last year all over the place. It causes no harm as it rots down and decays .This saves me a fortune on tip fees during the cost of living crisis.
unless you’re doing it as a business, it doesn’t cost anything to take your garden waste to the tip
thankfully most responsible people do just that
if you are running a business and charging people to dispose of their garden waste, and then fly-tipping it..
that’s Fraud!
I charge between £30 to £50 to dispose of waste garden material in west wight and tell customers it’s going to the tip. Then just tip it anywhere . This is all just extra profit for me easy peasy money.
Then you should be ashamed of yourself.
The drivel that they have laid out in that article is breath taking – pardon the pun
The negative effects of fly-tipping garden waste include the introduction of invasive species to the local habitat. – well seeing as it is locals dumping local waste in local habitats, it will mean the same species being about half a mile down the road from where they were. Most insects, pollen, leaves, twigs etc will get blown that far in a decent wind – so the council are talking out of their backsides.
garden waste harmful to the environment – ha ha ha – seeing as it is already “in the environment, comes from the environment and will biodegrade whilst still in the environment” it won’t harm anything
dont charge so much then
Absolute perfect 100% comment
Council don’t have a clue, remember they told us in COVID, can’t work,2m apart, wear face mask, kids can’t go to school etc. COVID is fast developing again across the UK and Isle of Wight and people are suffering but nothing . Leeson Road wasn’t safe yesterday but is safe for 7 weeks?.
Council should have a free open 24hr area to dump garden waste, they make money turning it to compost anyhow.
Over £100 for garden waste disposal but most other Council’s charge half that a year and now you say don’t fly tip garden waste.
by the time you’ve driven somewhere to fly-tip it, you might as well just take it to the tip,.. its not exactly difficult and it’s free
It would be more accurate to state that raising the soil level around the base could reduce the oxygen available to the roots and lead to the bark rotting.
How many 100s of 1000s of tons would that take
We the tax payer urge the IW Council to supply green waste bins for free or at a minimal cost
If anybody is short of vineweed I have shitloads I can give away for free
Thanks Craig for your kind offer, I have an abundant supply too!
Garden waste harmful to the environment? Those new Scooter’s are not only harmful in manufacturing, charging and often causing accidents from damage to other vehicles, injuries and sometimes death, but council support them. Never heard anyone coming to harm from garden waste…
The council warn of raising the land level and destroying trees ,have a walk along Afton Marsh and see all the trees that have been left in water after the new foot path was put in .Most are dead or dying but that is ok isnt it . They make up S t to fit their own agenda.
Completely agree. What was a natural path with abundant wildlife has been destroyed just so it is easier for cyclists to use (which takes all of 3 minutes to cycle down and ends up in a dead end)
The path was totally under water for most of the last winter winter when previously it was always passable with care and caused further flooding on what was the alternative route (which is still under water)
Were the locals asked if they wanted this… no… I think I might actually fly tip my garden waste along there to try to mop up some of the flood damage.
We asked the council not to rip us off on the green waste bins. Well that fell on deaf ears. Soooooooooooo
Whilst I don’t agree with fly-tipping, what’s being said in the article is clearly nonsense.
How can natural, garden waste be harmful to the environment? That’s just an absurd statement to make.
Perhaps in future, the Echo shouldn’t simply copy and paste anything and everything the Council send them. Think about what you’re doing, and maybe question things before publishing them.
Certainly, we should discourage people from fly-tipping, but for the right, sensible reasons.
Nice bonfire gets rid of it for free, no cost just a match and the neighbours County Press.
Says the council who charges the highest green waste charges in the
Country.
Lol
Std Council tax should cover green waste.
I blame the morons who pay extra for a green waste bin.
I read today Sadiq Khan is thinking about charging Londoners
who have a drive.
It will happen on the Island if people allow it.
Stop paying for Green Waste F.F.S
Getting rid of the pathetic booking system might help.
