New rules at Cowes Enterprise College will have students chaperoned to the toilets during lesson times, sparking outrage among parents and pupils.
Cowes Enterprise College, on Crossfield Avenue, has announced that as of the next academic year, starting in September, new rules will be applied to toilet accessibility for students.
The new rules will see the student loos locked during lesson time, and they will only be open for under an hour in the school day – during break and lunch times.
Students who use the toilet pass will now need to provide confirmation of medical needs to use the toilets during lesson times.
Island Echo understands that students will be escorted to the toilets by a member of staff if they wish to use the toilets during lesson time.
A spokesperson for the academy has told Island Echo:
“We are committed to providing the best possible education for all our students. Like many schools, we operate a toilet policy which is designed to minimise disruption to learning, ensuring students are in class and ready to learn, and which upholds appropriate safeguarding measures.
“For the next academic year we are reviewing toilet passes, which are used by a smaller number of students. Going forward, these will require confirmation of medical need so that appropriate support is directed to those who need it.

Where necessary, students can still use the toilet during lessons, with measures in place to support their safety and learning.
“Our priority remains to create a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment for all members of our school community, and we will continue to work closely with students, families and staff to achieve this.”
What about all the young girls who have just started menstruating? Already embarrassed they are now going to have to walk up to a male teacher and tell them they need to go to the bathroom.
Absolutely. Sexism, discrimination and paternalism all rolled into one. Girls, I suggest you ALL take a very loud stand on this and a big pat on the back for any boy who proudly stands with them. This is not education, this is control and an attempt at public body shaming as a reaction to a few kids who can’t stand being in lessons. I wonder why if this is the ethos?

I started my period at 15 and was heavy in the middle of my art mock exam it was horrific, never seen so much blood went through my underwear, grey school skirt and on the chair. Thankfully it was P.E day and we had compassionate teachers back then, had to wear my P.E kit the rest of the day. The boys picked on me chronic.
So, school capacity of 1500, lets assume that 750 of them are girls. A 15 minute break….and what, 10 toilets? My question to you is how fast you can change your sanitary towel or worse still, tampon, wash your hands and move aside for the other 749? Answers on a pin head. Oh, hang on…
