NITON CLIFF PLUNGE VICTIM NAMED

markweekesfatalfacebookAn Island man who died after his vehicle plunged over 100ft off a cliff edge in Niton on Thursday has been named in court today (Tuesday). 

Mark Weekes, 42, of Uplands Road, Northwood was pronounced dead at the scene of Thursday’s incident which occurred at Old Blackgang Road.

Police, fire, ambulance and Coastguard teams responded to the hard-to-reach scene at around 18:00, however some teams were stood down once it was established a death had occurred and that no other persons were trapped.

imageIt is understood Mr Weekes drove over the edge of the cliff at the former Niton Radio Station before his vehicle, a Renault Laguna, impacted with the ground within a heavily wooded area. The car ended upside down and Mr Weekes’ body was found outside the vehicle.

The heavily damaged car was removed from the scene yesterday (Monday).

Tragically, the Coroner’s Court today heard how friends watched Mr Weekes’ vehicle go over the cliff edge.

The inquest has been adjourned until January 2015 whilst the full circumstances behind the incident at investigated.
