A primary school pupil has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital after a collision involving a car outside Summerfields Primary School in Newport earlier this afternoon (Thursday). Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and resources from Isle of Wight Ambulance Service rushed to the school on Atkinson Drive a little after 15:00. Island Echo understands that a child was hit by a vehicle at school pick-up time. Minor injuries were sustained during the accident, Police have confirmed.

20mph near all schools is a must.
There’s this rough rule of thumb in architecture about schools (or residential streets where families live in general) that you imagine your primary school kid riding around there on a bike (like older generations did when they were younger) and ask yourself whether you’d feel safe about it.
If not then something’s wrong with the design of the street.
Nothing wrong with the street at all.
Just something wrong with the motorists and their vehicles that use them – and people like you that try to switch the blame
I didn’t say it must be the case here. Just provided a general rule of thumb.
If you’d let your kid bike there alone, it means it’s very likely safe.
But even greatest motorist can slip, humans make mistakes. Infrastructure can often cover that – for example in town centres it’s frowned upon to mix car and foot traffic exactly because of that.
And blaming the driver is not going to stop a car from hitting you. Infrastructure will. It’s not about assigning blame post factum, it’s about prevention.
Alas I’d wait for the official investigation. I don’t know about UK but in many countries it is mandatory to perform the design review after accidents. Are you in a review committee by any chance?
Most streets in the UK have been in place for generations. The fact that it is no longer safe to cycle anywhere now is due to motorists attitudes and their oversize cars.
The street did not cause this accident.
What you say is true, bigger cars to accommodate a very “Fat” population….People have become lazy that haven’t a clue how to cook a good meal….

So the age of the driver has been released ? Where ? If you see the congestion around when all ages are released at once there was a high risk this was going to happen ! Crazy to fill the streets at once filter the times idiots It’s already on the list for upgrade this month but too late !!

From what I can see out on the roads/urban environments, both pedestrians and drivers alike are simply not aware of each other and don’t take enough care to move around safely, bring back the Green Cross Code, and follow the Highway Code simple, but it works!
