ANOTHER SMALL FIRE AT SANDOWN’S DERELICT OCEAN HOTEL EXTINGUISHED

Fire crews were once again mobilised to the derelict Ocean Hotel in Sandown last night (Saturday) when it was reported that smoke was issuing from the building. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service sent appliances from Sandown, Ryde and Newport to the Esplanade and High Street at around 21:15. Police and paramedics also attended the incident amid fears persons may have been trapped inside the property. However, upon arrival of firefighters it became clear the fire was small in nature, contained to an outbuilding and that no persons were involved. 1 hose reel jet was utilised to tackle the fire, with other areas of the dilapidated structure checked using a thermal imaging camera. In recent days it has been reported on social media that young people have been seen coming and going from the grounds of the former hotel, with suggestions that individuals may be living inside too. Part of the Esplanade was cordoned off for a time but the incident was brought to a close by 22:00.
