2 men remain in custody after a car crashed into the front garden of a house near Whippingham yesterday evening (Saturday). Police were called shortly after 18:00 to a report of a collision involving 2 vehicles – a Ford Focus and a van – on East Cowes Road. Officers arrived to find a badly damaged Focus in the garden of a residential property. It’s understood the vehicle collided with a van at speed, before clipping a verge on one side of the carriageway and veering across the road to the other side. It has been confirmed that a 32-year-old man from East Cowes and a 20-year-old man from Newport were both arrested on suspicion of failing to stop after a road accident, driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs and driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level is above the limit.
On his arrest, the 20-year-old man was verbally abusive towards police officers and was further arrested for using threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour to cause harassment/alarm/distress. Both men remain in custody at Newport Police Station at this current time. Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing. No serious injuries have been reported.
