Summer Chambers is continuing to impress in the world of archery following several recent wins – and the 13-year-old has just secured her place at the National Age Group Academy.
Last month Island Echo reported on Summer’s fantastic inaugural season in the sport which has included wins at the Vectis Open, a Hampshire tri-county match, the Junior National Outside Competition and Mushroom Shoot.
The good news continues… last weekend Summer attended the 2-day Hampshire County Championship event in Andover. She finished school on Friday evening and was on the 16:30 ferry to Southampton where she went straight to Southampton Archery Club to put in some practice.
On Saturday, she shot 12 dozen arrows at the longest distance for her age – 40 metres – winning a 1st place medal. The success continued on Sunday – the championship day – where she shot a WA 1440 metric 4, 12 dozen arrows split between, 40, 30, 20 and 10 metres. She managed a score of 1323 and became the Under 14 Recurve Hampshire Champion.
Earlier in the month, Summer represented the Hampshire Junior Team in a tri-county match against Kent and Surrey at Southampton. Hampshire won the match and Summer once again won 1st place for her category. Out of the 29 archers that participated, Summer was the best archer beating everyone in every discipline.
Although new to the sport, Summer is already eyeing up an Olympic future having secured a place at Archery GB’s National Age Group Academy.
From October she will compete in weekend camps at Lilleshall, Shropshire under the guidance of pathway coach Philippa Lowe, working in conjunction with Summer’s Hampshire coach Martin Oakley.
