A 6-year-old boy has been flown to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries, as has a 37-year-old man, following a head-on crash in Calbourne earlier today (Friday), with Police now appealing for witnesses to the smash. As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to Middle Road, near the junction with Pump Lane, at 10:38 this morning. 2 cars – a black Seat Ateca and a blue Honda Jazz – had collided head-on, with the force of the impact shunting the Jazz backwards into a hedge. Police have now confirmed that a total of 7 people – including 4 children aged 4 to 8 – have sustained injuries as a result of the serious collision.
The driver of the Honda, a 37-year-old man, has suffered serious injuries and has been flown by the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance to Southampton. A 6-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Honda has also suffered serious injuries and has also been flown to Southampton. The other passenger, a 4-year-old boy, suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Seat, a 27-year-old man, suffered minor injuries. His passengers – all female and aged 29, 8 and 6 – also suffered minor injuries. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that they expect the road to remain closed for several hours whilst investigators continue to forensically examine the crash scene. Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this collision or either vehicle in the moments before the collision. In particular, they would like to speak to anyone with relevant dashcam footage.
One line of investigation is whether one of the drivers suffered a medical episode at the wheel. Anyone with information is asked to cal Police on 101, quoting 44240351203 – or make a report online at https://www.hampshire.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report/.
