Police are attempting to trace a key witnesses to an assault on a 42-year-old in Newport last week.

The incident occurred around 18:00 last Friday (5th April), close to New Street Car Park in Scarotts Lane, when a 42-year-old woman was attacked and left with minor injuries.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged on suspicion of assault and bailed to appear before Isle of Wight Magistrate Courts at the end of the month.

Detectives from Newport CID are now attempting to find and speak to a man who tried to intervene and break the incident up. He is described as smartly dressed and wearing a ‘man bag’. It is understood he left the scene and walked towards Newport Town Centre.

He may have been in the company of a second potential witness who was wearing a white jacket.
