Officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit are appealing for witnesses to come forward as a scooterist, who was seriously injured in a collision on Saturday, deteriorates into a critical condition in hospital.
At 17:12 on Saturday evening, a blue Jonway scooter was involved in a collision with a Citroen Xsara on Stroudwood Road on the outskirts of Ryde.
The rider, a 66-year-old man from Ryde, was taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport with serious injuries. His condition has since deteriorated and he is now said to be in a critical condition.
The Citroen driver, a 51-year-old man from Essex, was shaken but otherwise uninjured.
Sergeant Dave Sanderson from the Roads Policing unit at Shanklin said:
“The scooter rider was heading towards the Smallbrook stadium as the Citroen was pulling out of a driveway on Stroudwood Road.
“The two vehicles were in collision with one another and as a result the motorcyclist suffered serious internal injuries and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital. Sadly, his condition has since deteriorated.
“I’m therefore now appealing for any witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw either vehicle prior to it to come forward with information.”
UPDATE MONDAY: Island Echo has received some fantastic news over the weekend, that although the rider is still in intensive care, he has now opened his eyes and although could not speak at the time, he recognised his wife.
Island Echo wish him all the best on the road to recovery.
