The search for a missing dog who vanished from Stenbury Down near Ventnor in October last year has ended in tragedy, with the revelation that Charlie – a collie/lurcher cross – died two days after going missing.
An anonymous source has come forward via the Island’s Country Watch to say that they buried the much-loved pet on 20th October after discovering Charlie’s body on the downland. They have since produced the dog’s collar to owner, Carol Jones.
A social-media campaign was launched to help find Charlie, titled Come Home Charlie, with ‘sightings’ reported across the Island. As the months have gone on, hopes of finding the black and white dog have faded, but scores of people still rallied together to organise searches of the Stenbury Down area.
Carol Jones said in a statement this week:
“As soon as ground conditions allow, Charlie’s body will be exhumed and returned to me
“This may take several days, so I would ask everybody to please be patient a bit longer before I can confirm that Charlie is finally home.
“I have also received his collar and confirm it is Charlie’s.”
