UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a tractor fire near to St Catherine’s Point – the furthest southerly point of the Isle of Wight.

Smoke can be seen from miles around according to Island Echo readers, who are reporting sightings from as far away as Merstone and The Downs.

Appliances from Newport and Ventnor are on scene.

The alarm was raised around 14:40.

UPDATE @ 15:55 – A tractor has been completely destroyed by fire whilst working the fields at St Catherine’s Point.

Witnesses have descrbed hearing 4 loud explosions as the blaze took hold.

The fire has spread to the surrounding field but fortunately fire crews have managed to contain the incident to one area. No animals or persons have been injured, with the tractor driver able to jump clear of the vehicle.

4 appliances from Newport, Shanklin and Ventnor are on scene alongside a water carrier from Freshwater.

A representative from the National Trust is also attending.

UPDATE – The incident has been brought to a close. All appliances have now stood down and returned to station.

UPDATE TUESDAY – 1 appliance from Ventnor has been called back to St Catherine’s Point this morning due to a small flare up.

The single crew were mobilised at around 07:50.
