VIDEO: A local supermarket have been praised for their generosity after donating over 600 bottles of water for motorists when Newport came to a halt following a serious road traffic collision yesterday (Thursday).
Hundreds of motorists were caught up in lengthy traffic queues in and around Newport yesterday afternoon, with concerns growing for their welfare as temperatures reached around 30c.
The decision was made by the Isle of Wight Council and the Emergency Planning team to purchase bottled water from local retailers, however one of the suppliers, Lidl in Newport, very kindly donated a total of 600 bottles of water.
The emergency operation was captured on camera by Island Echo as Police officers arrived to transport the refreshments across town for volunteers and firefighters to hand out.
A spokesperson for the Council said:
“We would like to thank Lidl for this kind gesture and the police for helping us to distribute the water”.
